AS 4452:2025, the new standard for storing toxic substances
AS 4452:2025 is a genuinely new document — published 25 July 2025, replacing a standard that had stood since 1997. We confirmed its current designation directly from the publisher’s own catalogue. A regulator naming it specifically, we have not confirmed.

What it is
AS 4452:2025, "The storage and handling of toxic substances", was published on 25 July 2025 and supersedes AS/NZS 4452:1997. We confirmed the title and publication date directly against the Standards Australia store listing.
In our own words: this standard covers the safe storage and handling of substances classified as toxic (Class 6.1) under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code — a distinct category from, though often stored alongside, the older, far better-cited standard for flammable liquids and the standard for storing several dangerous-goods classes together.
What we have not confirmed
We read, in full, the SafeWork NSW Code of Practice used to confirm citations for AS 1940 and AS/NZS 3833 above, and it did not name AS 4452 in the sections we reviewed. That document is a 2014 edition, though, which predates this 2025 standard entirely and could at most have cited an earlier AS/NZS 4452 designation — so its silence does not settle the question either way.
So this is a straightforward, honest gap: we have not confirmed a regulator citing AS 4452, and we have not found evidence that none exists. If a more recent Code of Practice edition names it, we have not yet located and read that edition. The wider question of what a regulator citation is actually worth applies here as much as to any page with a confirmed citation — the absence of one is a fact too.
What we may not tell you
No indoor or outdoor storage quantity limit, separation distance or handling procedure from AS 4452 appears on this site. It is genuinely too new for much reliable secondary material to exist about it yet, which is exactly why we go to the publisher directly rather than repeating whatever else is written online about it.
That newness cuts both ways for a reader. A document this recent has had less time to accumulate the kind of secondary commentary, training material and provider familiarity that a decades-old standard like AS 1940 has. A provider or supplier who can speak to it specifically and correctly is telling you something real about how current their own knowledge is.
What replacing a 28-year-old standard actually changes
AS/NZS 4452:1997 stood for twenty-eight years before being replaced. We are not in a position to say what changed between the two editions — that comparison would require reading both documents in full, which we have not done and would not reproduce even if we had. What we can say is that a business still working from material written against the 1997 edition is, by definition, working from a superseded document, in the same way a tender specifying the superseded standard it replaced elsewhere in this reference is asking for an outdated one.
How it fits with the rest of the dangerous-goods picture
A warehouse dealing with toxic stock rarely deals with only that one hazard class. The basics of dangerous goods storage cover the general process any of these standards sit inside, and the classification that decides whether something counts as toxic in the first place is the document that tells you whether AS 4452 is even the right standard to be looking at.
Common questions
- When was AS 4452:2025 published?
- 25 July 2025, confirmed directly against the Standards Australia store listing. It supersedes AS/NZS 4452:1997.
- Does a regulator cite AS 4452?
- We have not confirmed one. A 2014 Code of Practice we read in full did not name it, but that document predates the 2025 standard, so its silence is not conclusive either way.
- How is AS 4452 different from AS/NZS 3833?
- AS 4452 covers substances specifically classified as toxic. AS/NZS 3833 covers storing several different dangerous-goods classes together in the same store. A warehouse can need either standard, or both, depending on what it actually holds.
